The other day I pretended I had an excuse to zip down the 417 to Montreal for a walk. I dragged one teenager with me, because education, but also they actually love our outings especially when they include a visit to a museum, café au lait in a bowl and some junk food on the way home to balance out all the wholesomeness.
I’m not a trained art critic or anything, but I know what I like and usually I know why, so it’ll do. I enjoy the Orb, newly installed as of this year, because it is beautiful, of course. But more than that — I appreciate that the mirrors allow you to see everything almost to the exclusion of the structure itself. It is so busy showing you what’s around it that it has almost no energy of its own.
People trained in the arts have a more elegant way of describing the piece by Spanish artist SpY:
“The sculpture’s complex surface, composed of 90 convex discs made of polished steel, reflects the surrounding space, generating a sophisticated kaleidoscopic effect. With its dynamic and minimalist style, SpY invites you to reconsider your perception of space, movement and light.”
It will be in the pool in front of Place des Arts for at least five years, which will give us the opportunity to admire it in all seasons and, while we’re at it, to take time to breathe in this wonderful open space that is Quartier des spectacles in a city that truly understands artists.
