From Bama with Bite: Idiots in charge and other scrambles

The week in review with Taylor McLendon, one of my favourite Alabamians.

I’ve been watching and rewatching Idiocracy this past week, because it’s funny but also too prescient by half and I didn’t know it would become real with the suggestion of having some kind of UFC or wrestling match on the grounds of the White House to mark the country’s 250th anniversary (assuming it survives until next summer).

The thing is, that it’s not as far-fetched as we may once have assumed. I read The Closing of the American Mind and Amusing Ourselves to Death. I read Fahrenheit 541 and Brave New World. I even interviewed Ray Bradbury once. There is no shortage of people having predicted this descent into aggressive (almost rabid) anti-intellectualism. And I say all this as someone who loves a great fight. But UFC doesn’t represent America anymore than Brawndo could grow crops.

On a completely different note, about the new pedestrian scramble coming to Auburn, Alabama… I wrote about those here, and I don’t understand why they are not more popular. Now that one is coming to Alabama, watch me push them like crazy.
