A most livable quay

I discovered North Vancouver by chance in August 2023. I had to be in Surrey for a frisbee tournament with my kid, and had asked my followers on social media who might be in the area whether they wanted to take me out for a drink. I’m slutty like that, sue me.
Anyway, one person did want to take me out for a drink, someone who’d been following my writing since my libertarian days. He gave me a meeting point at the bottom of Lonsdale and we sampled a few microbreweries. We had a grand old time and lovely conversation, and as a fine bonus I fell in love with the neighbourhood.
When I went back to Vancouver for a few days last fall, I chose to stay in North Van, at the Lonsdale Quay hotel right there on the water, a few steps away from the water bus.
It wasn’t until much later that I noticed this story about the place topping the list of most livable cities in Canada. A couple of reasons:
Median household income: $121,723
Households spending more than 30% of income on housing: 29%
39% more walkable than Canadian average
38% less criminality than Canadian average
Average time to commute by car: 27 minutes, versus 34 minutes by transit
89% have regular access to health care provider
73% report a strong sense of belonging
Me, being a professional non-expert, I found it welcoming, clean, safe, happy and easy to get around. Has lots of great craft beer, too. Highly recommend.
Quand on voyage on découvre des endroits bien le fun, surtout ceux dont on n’attendait rien. À l’été 2023 j’étais à Surrey pour un truc de frisbee avec ma plus vieille et j’avais demandé comme ça sur Facebook, y-a-t-il quelqu’un qui est dans le coin et qui veuille me sortir?
Je suis guidoune de même.
Un gentil monsieur qui me lit depuis l’époque du Québécois libre (ce qui ne rajeunit personne) et qui vit maintenant à North Vancouver, a levé virtuellement la main. Il m’a fait découvrir une couple de micro-brasseries ma foi charmantes en plus d’un quartier franchement sympa. Un bled spectaculairement le fun. Donc quand je suis retournée faire un tour à Vancouver l’automne dernier, j’ai décidé d’y séjourner, à l’hôtel qui est situé drette là sur le quai.
C’est pas pour rien que North Vancouver a été nommée meilleure ville au Canada — en fait, ville plus vivable de tout le pays. C’est beau, en plus. Mais surtout, c’est très facile de bien s’y sentir. Et la bière est plus qu’excellente.
