Fostering French bilingualism

J’ai vu le headline and thought, shit, people vont pogner les nerfs et grimper dans les rideaux. 

StatsCan says French-English bilingualism is increasing in Canada. Including in Quebec. Which will not doubt make the ghost of Jacques Parizeau et celui de Bernard Landry get hives or something. 

Both men, by the way, étaient bilingues. Surtout Parizeau, qui avait fait une partie de ses études en Angleterre. 

Here’s what’s bothering many people in Quebec: 

The proportion of Canadians who predominantly speak French at home declined in all provinces and territories except Yukon between 2016 and 2021, according to the latest census release.

Statistics Canada says over three in four Canadians report English as their first official language, a proportion that's increased over the five-year period.

That's while the proportion of people who report French as their first official language declined.

C’est sûr que c’est inquiétant, quand on le voit d’une certaine façon. I’m a francophone. I love writing and speaking French. Et le bilingue aussi. Et voilà le secret, d’une certaine façon. C’est en bilinguant qu’on perfect our first language, ne le saviez-vous pas. 

Anyway, tout ça pour dire qu’on ne devrait pas s’en faire outre-mesure. L’importance de parler, d’enseigner, de lire et d’écrire en français ne diminue pas. Our ability to do that while also mastering English n’est pas une menace à la langue française.
