Putting the square back in the square

Putting the square back in the square

Loving this example of smart redesign that puts pedestrians first without delaying vehicle traffic. And it got me thinking about the ridiculous mess of intersections we have around Waller, Nicholas, and Rideau that are so crazy unfriendly to and dangerous for pedestriansn that nobody ever walks there if they have any say in the matter. They’re also always clogged with cars going nowhere slowly, and buses, taxis and very brave cyclists. Drivers get so frustrated there that it’s common to see them make aggressive turns onto Rideau, almost pushing pedestrians who are on their crossing lights with their bumpers.

It’s not like the buildings around that area are pretty or anything, so maybe we could think of re-arranging all this to make it less of a dangerous spot for people who might, you never know, enjoy walking in the touristy parts of downtown Ottawa?
