Today's quote is something I heard a Buddhist teacher say on the Waking Up podcast with Sam Harris. It resonated with me because listening isn't something I do nearly enough. The reason is that most people take longer than I do to say things (that's a comment on me; I'm a speed-talker), and I don't have the patience to wait. So I rush in either to fill the silence or finish their sentences for them. Which is a) very impolite and b) counter-productive. I don't do New Year's resolutions, but among the things I would like to learn to do better this year, listening is near the top of the list.

Listening is the shortest distance between two people.
