High functioning sociopathy properly understood

Just had this thought listening to a New York Times book review podcast hearing an author describing the anxiety of being long-listed for some prestigious book prize (the horror, right? and yet, I think I get it), and then I thought of my lovely Benedict's rendition of Sherlock Holmes as a high functioning sociopath and the little light bulb in my head flashed and lo, the truth emerged: Whoa, but this is one long-ass sentence.

More pithily put (not hard, I know): In order to be a successful artist - by which I mean to live your art as only you see fit - you kind of need to be a little bit of a sociopath. Someone who doesn't give a hoot about others. Because if you start to care what people think, you'll never do anything worth remembering later.

So there. Be like Sherlock.
