As with so many keen ideas, “depaving” originated in Portland, Oregon. Really a wonderful place to visit and take inspiration from, by the way. I highly recommend it.
Depaving is what it sounds like: removing pavement, usually from parking spots that are no longer in use, and replacing them with something green.
It’s not quite as simple as just taking away asphalt, and obviously you can’t do that where you don’t have permission, but what about those places where nobody uses the lots anymore and it just sits there, looking ugly? Why not replace it with a filtration garden or a playground?
Some of it is already taking place in Ottawa, with Depave Paradise in conjunction with several community groups. Their work can be seen at the Kitchissippi United Church, Anthony’s School, and St. Bernard Catholic School. I can think of other places where this might be needed.
