Apparently, the Afghans are going to “review” that stupid proposed legislation that would, among other things, allow men to rape their wives. Not nearly good enough. And besides, I don’t believe a single word they’re saying; if this particular bill isn’t passed, another one will later. And even if no bill were ever passed formally giving men those rights over women, do you think that would automatically mean women in Afghanistan are treated properly?
Of course not. The problem isn’t what laws Afghanistan has on the books so much as what culture it has. And when it comes to the treatment of girls and women, the predominant culture in Afghanistan reeks, period. We all know it, even if we’re not all willing to admit it publicly. So what are we doing allowing ourselves to be distracted by the particulars of one piece of proposed legislation?
