Former prime minister Jean Chrétien reminds current PM Stephen Harper who gets to take credit for balancing the books. That’s the one thing for which I would give Mr. Chrétien any points for his years in office. But he does deserve them.

I don’t know why the Liberals are so proud of this as I distinctly remember how they got the surplus. We were taxed heavily with a lot of increases. The EI payments were raised significantly but it was made much harder to collect. Even our young people with part time jobs trying to save for university were charged even though there was no way they would be able to collect. But MOST IMPORTANT, they slashed transfer payments to the province for health care. Mike Harris is still vilified for how he had to make cuts in health care but he didn’t have the funds. The Liberals kept those in Ottawa to pad their “surplus” Dalton McGinty better watch out. The Liberals will likely do it again but this time he will be the one forced to make cuts.
